Ranking the alternatives changes decisions: most people who search “payday loan” have three or four cheaper options they have never priced. Here is the full ladder, from free money to the most expensive credit in the country, with the real cost of each on a $500 shortfall.
The Ladder, Priced on $500
| Rung | Option | Real cost on $500 | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sell, shift, or apply: items, gigs, assistance programs | $0 | Same day to 2 weeks |
| 2 | Employer payroll advance | Usually free | Days, HR permitting |
| 3 | App advance (EarnIn, Dave, Brigit, Chime, Varo) | $0 to $30 in tips/fees | Minutes |
| 4 | Credit union PAL | $20 to $35 over 3 months at 28% APR cap | 1 to 3 days |
| 5 | State extended payment plan on an existing loan | $0 (statutory) | Before due date |
| 6 | Credit card cash advance | ~$25 fee + 30% APR accrual | Instant, if you have the card |
| 7 | Online installment loan | $80 to $500+ over months, by APR | 1 to 2 days |
| 8 | Payday advance | $75 to $125, single cycle | Minutes to 1 day |
| 9 | Tribal installment (banned states) | $300 to $600 over months | ~1 day |
Rung 1 pays best and gets tried least. Rungs 2 through 4 solve the majority of real shortfalls once someone shows the door exists.
The Rungs Worth Knowing in Detail
PALs (rung 4) are federal credit-union products: $200 to $2,000, one to twelve months, 28% APR ceiling, no hard pull in most cases, and most credit unions report the payments, which builds credit while the debt retires. Membership often opens with a small share deposit; the mechanics are in how credit unions work.
App advances (rung 3) move money against wages you have already earned. The costs are tips or weekly subscriptions rather than APR, which makes them the cheapest fast money in the table, with two limits: ceilings near $500, and eligibility that depends on your paycheck arriving through a connected account. Our app guides (Chime, Cash App, Varo) cover the mechanics.
EPPs (rung 5) are the free statutory exit if you are already holding an advance you cannot clear: several states require lenders to convert once per year into an installment plan at no extra charge. Ask before the due date.
The Expensive Tail, Read Honestly
A credit card cash advance (rung 6) is remembered as terrible and is often mid-table: a 3-to-5% fee plus roughly 30% APR accrual from day one beats every product below it. Payday (rung 8) buys minutes-to-decision for a 391% to 460% annualized fee. Tribal installment (rung 9) exists mainly where licensing does not; its terms and vetting are covered in what is a tribal loan. Auto title, which would sit between 7 and 8 on price, is deliberately off the ladder: a 300%-APR loan with your car as hostage is not an “alternative” most situations survive.
How to Use the Ladder
Start at rung 1 and stop at the first rung that fits the shortfall and your slack check. If you reach rung 7 or below, take the smallest amount that solves the problem, and put the repayment date in writing where you will see it. Every product on this site exists for the rungs where we operate; the ladder exists so you use the lowest one available.
